I didn't want to hijack the thread on Rob's Reso Room so I figured I would just start another thread on the course Jerry has up on Modern Music Masters, Inc.
I have been playing for several years but was totally self taught with a few books and DVD's so needless to say I started off with some bad habits. As a three finger banjo player I had my rolls down pretty well and thought that they would just transfer over to the dobro. Well, they do and they don't, at least for me. My timing seemed to always suffer and my rolls were just never as smooth as I wanted them to be. Long story cut short, I finally decided to take the plunge on Jerry's course and try and get me going the right direction. I know it isn't cheap but neither was my dobro and all of its accessories. Even though I am not very far through the course yet I feel like I have learned some valuable lessons along the way from simply gripping the bar the right way to drilling on the rolls. I like watching the video before I even pick up the dobro so I am not distracted from what I am trying to learn.
So far I have restarted from lesson 1 three times just to make sure that I haven't missed anything along the way and I usually do pick up on something new every time. I also like that the lessons are mine to keep as long as I want to. So, for a lifetime of lessons from the master I feel the price will be well worth it. Your mileage may vary but I am one happy camper.

Keep us posted on the progress - the course looks great to me and I'm sure I would benefit from going back to correctly execute some of the basics, but having paid $300 to to re-up with Rob, Jerry's course isn't happening for me in 2021.
During a dormant period when Jerry was holed up at home due to the pandemic I took a Zoom workshop with him from "The Squirrel's Nest," his combo studio/music room/man cave above his detached garage. There were ballpark 20 participants, and we all got to ask some questions. My all time favorite Douglas tune is "Pushed Too Far," and Jerry gave me some tips on how to better play the number and showed everyone some of the licks.
It is an "adult portion" and I'm still working on it.

...make that "not happening for me in 2022." I'm slow to change. ![]()

Thanks, I do not want to redo 2021 again! I will make updates as I can.

A little update. I am now about 40% through the Jerry Douglas course and I have to say that it has truly improved my playing. I took a couple of weeks just working on rolls and it has really paid off. Now I am able to use the proper roll technique without too much thought about it. Even if I have to think about it very much the proper roll technique comes pretty quickly to the hand. I have also spent a pretty good amount of time on bar technique which has greatly improved my intonation. I feel like I am playing more musically, if that makes sense. Songs that I have been working on are coming to hand much quicker for me. Even if it is nothing more than paying closer attention to what I am doing, this course for me has been a real bargain musically.
