Looks like it may have done at the ends of a show and the performer could have been inebriated. 

I think even an FBI hand writing expert would have plenty of trouble with this one.

I asked a friend who knows National guitars but he didn’t recognize the signature. He did say the guitar was probably between 10 and 20 years old but he would need a serial number to date it. This should narrow your search for a name.

In going back and reading the thread, is this a quiz question where Robert Hale knows the answer? Or is it a situation where he doesn't know who signed it and he's looking for help? 

I don't like signed guitars to begin with. I wouldn't want Jerry Douglas to sign my best dobro. 

And I sure as heck wouldn't want to some sprawling  unrecognizable scribble across the top of my guitar. 

I think bringing beater guitars around at festivals to collect signatures is fine. It'd be like adding stickers to a suitcase of places you visited.
