I'm ready to start my resonator journey but Im not able to find either or these guitars at the moment.

MarkinSonoma - Posted - 08/08/2022:  23:30:04

Are you looking for new, or used?

And can you share with us why a Vintage R or an Appalachian?

As far the Vintage R, that model is out of production at Beard. There is a note about this on the Vintage R page on the Beard website. I think with Paul's new line of RadioTone guitars, some existing models have been shelved either temporarily or permanently. The RadioTone in the R body would likely be the closest thing to The Vintage R.

Since you are new and your first post was brief, we have no idea how much you know or what you don't know, so I apologize if you are already familiar with the content of my post.

The original Appalachian business was owned by the late Tom Warner who sadly passed away from Covid awhile back.

Several years ago he brought on Tony Langley and trained him in his guitar building methods, so Tony took over the business. Prior to his passing Tom Warner built a small number of guitars under his last name as he was edging toward full retirement.

As far as the current iteration of Appalachian resonators, Tony Langley is full speed ahead and frequently shares photos of his finished guitars online. You shouldn't have any problem in being able to order a nice Appalachian from Tony.

If you order an Appalachian from Tony you may have to wait a bit, but it's worth it. If you want to find a used Appalachian online, you may have to wait a bit , but it's worth it.

rjb5191 - Posted - 08/09/2022:  13:41:22

I'm interested in those two due to their sound and my budget, which is around ~$1500. I've seen those used guitars going for less than that and also more. In that case, I'm hoping for finding a used guitar. Can tony build a new Appalachian for around that price? The radio standard series is well above my budget range. I found a resophonic 57 for around $2000 used, which again, is a bit more than I want to spend especially since I think I prefer the Vintage R tone. It's more focused and with more bite from what I'm able to discern.

Sehy squareneck (rosewood/spruce) is for sale on the Steel Guitar Forum for $1500.00. I never played one, but it looks nice, so you might look into feedback from owners of these.

Howard has given these a thumbs up for "best bang for the buck".

....OOoooohhh, Sorry Howard. I thought the respondent's name was Howard P, but it was Howard R!! And not nearly as distinguished as you. My apologies.....

No worries. I thought maybe old age was taking a toll.

Howard is a great guy! We used to meet up in Texas for the Steel Guitar Jamboree.

Share war stories ;-)

The "R" is for Roberts.

Please, somebody buy the Sehy before I do!

I have a Mango Sehy and it is a great instrument. The Rosewod would be a steal.

Cool.  That would be more in my budget.  Can you tell me more about your Sehy?  There's very little info on these guitars and I have not been able to find a single demo and sound example.  I would really like to hear how it sounds before considering buying it.  I really like the sound of the vintage R which to me seems to be mix of vintage and modern.  Im not looking for the most powerful modern sound, nor a vintage honky sound either.

ronmack - Posted - 08/12/2022:  00:30:37

I got the Mango Sehy and a. Beard MA 6 the same day. It was a struggle to decide which one to play. I would say the Sehy has great balance and tone. I paid $1800 for it 11 years ago. Mango is very similar to koa wood. I wouldn't hesitate getting the rosewood.

Thank you, I appreciate that.

There’s an Appalachian on Reverb right now for around grande.

Iink please?

RezBluez - Posted - 08/14/2022:  10:12:24

I don’t know how to put a link in. Just go to Reverb and punch Appalachian in the search, you will see if.

I was curious about this guitar myself and spent way too much time searching on Reverb, but so far came up empty on an Appalachian for around a grand.

As far as simply typing in "Appalachian" on Reverb, mostly what comes up are dulcimers and autoharps.

I did find this Appalachian on the site by googling, and it looks really nice. The seller is asking $1850.

Finally figured out how to provide a link.

RezBluez - Posted - 08/14/2022:  12:52:15

This is a pretty good deal, it comes with bars, picks, capo and a mic and case.

MarkinSonoma - Posted - 08/14/2022:  14:11:04

I have no idea how you went back and found it again Eddy, but I went back  to Reverb and typed Appalachian Reso which are the first two words and the result was "0 Listings."

That is a very good buy. Serial number 58 so Tom had a lot of guitars under his belt at that point.

I have played exactly two Appalachians so I'm anything but an authority. They  were both maple with lower serial numbers so earlier in Tom's building says.

We did an A/B  at a  jam years ago against my maple Clinesmith and they weren't in the same league, but it was still a quality reso for the money, and  I would not have hesitated to buy one if I didn't already have a nice main axe.

One had really nice inlay work on the neck and I recall the guy bought it new at the time for under $1800 so dollar value vs. another independent luthier with considerably higher pricing it was a  very good deal.

Mark,
It may of had something to do with being a Canadian sale. Your search may have not brought you to it. Yes it’s a great deal especially with all the extras. I would jump on it if I were looking for sure.

rjb5191 - Posted - 08/14/2022:  15:54:08

thank you very much! Considering this very highly and messaged the seller. Please don't swipe it from under my nose! lol.

Also, what do you guys think of this guitar: I was pretty close to buying it before the Appy came up.

reverb.com/item/57149267-gibso...-sunburst

Which guitar is nicer? Has anyone played a 27 deluxe and an appy?

docslyd - Posted - 08/14/2022:  17:15:01

The Gibson-made "Dobros" were not very well liked, respected, revered or desired....for multiple reasons. If you weren't overjoyed with it, you probably would have a hard time moving it. I wouldn't consider it over the others mentioned up to this point.

RezBluez - Posted - 08/14/2022:  17:21:42

I can’t speak on the Gibson, but I have had 4 Appy’s and they were all excellent guitars. Plus everything you need comes with it, so that would be my first choice between the two.

MarkinSonoma - Posted - 08/14/2022:  19:20:23

I have played a handful of Gibson era Dobros that were very nice, and others that weren't so hot.

Jerry Douglas posted about his experience with his Gibson signature models a number of years ago on his no longer forum  and I shared it here in the archives. Not a happy story.

Grab the Appalachian while it is still available to b grabbed.

wlgiii - Posted - 08/14/2022:  20:57:46

I say get the Appalachian, but I'm a bit biased- I have #40. And for what it's worth, I'd never heard or even seen one but ordered it solely based on the positive comments on this site.

rjb5191 - Posted - 08/15/2022:  02:40:08

Thanks for everybody's input! It's a tough choice.

Check out these demos of the 27 deluxe. I love this sound which I find to be fairly consistent between the two demos. I think i prefer it to the sound I've heard on the appalachian demos but listening to sound clips like this can be decieving of course. Furthermore, the 27 deluxe for sale has been modified with a beard cone and spyder and the tone may have changed away from what I'm hearing in the demos.

What makes you think the guitar for sale will sound like videos of entirely different guitars? The second sample is not a very good demonstration of tone, in my opinion....you really can’t hear the nuances of the guitar over the serial-murder attack.

....but that’s just my opinion. Buy whichever you think makes you happy.

The seller has a meet & greet sale pending.  You are safe for now!

rjb5191 - Posted - 08/15/2022:  12:43:11

I think the first sample sounds great, and I'm guessing that with the beard cone and spyder installed, the guitar was hopefully properly setup and any Gibson factory mistakes, corrected. Unfortuneatley, the seller with the appalachian on Reverb is not responding and they have no feedback, and are in Canada.....It's not looking so promising now.

RezBluez - Posted - 08/15/2022:  18:36:24

I would wait maybe try the guy with the Appy again, could be away for a bit, who knows. But you won’t regret it, plus 5 or 6 hundred dollars worth of gear. I would never buy a Gibson like that sight un-seen, Mark could tell you some horror stories about them I think. Also being from Canada can only be a good thing when your getting 25 cents on the dollar for any expense. I have had all my guitars shipped from the US to Canada and never had a problem.
But it’s your decision to make, if your just starting I’m sure you will be tickled pink with either. We put out there what we thought was the best option, doesn’t mean you can’t take another option. Have fun whatever you decide. Peace

FrederickPatterson - Posted - 08/29/2022:  07:54:50

The Appy is sold now. I hope rjb5191 was able to snag it.

I know this is late, but I have not been on this site since the new school year started, I teach high school. My first Appalachian was #23, 2010(green laminate birch), it sounded great with the Scheerhorn cone and Schoonover bridge. I have since replaced the cone with a Beard Legend. About a year later Tom built #60 for me, Koa that I bought and sent to him, same set up. Besides being solid Koa there was no difference in the playability, tone, volume between the 2 guitars. The fit and finish was better on the 2nd. He had made a total of 23 in 8 years of building. Tom contacted me after receiving the birch and said he what ever I posted online somewhere was creating a surge in his business, so up to #60 in less than a year compared to 23 in 8 years. A 2-3 years ago Josh Swift took my Koa to Bobby Wright for a set up, he put in the Beard shockwave bridge system and made a few other tweeks, better than ever. I still play both equally; Birch higher highs, lower lows, Koa more mid all over and a bit more punch. Bottom line, if you can find a Tom Warner build for a good price they are a good buy. I do not have any information about the current Appalachians.
