Hi Folks. Which clip on tuner do you prefer?

Hi Randy,

I use an Intelli IMT-500. Clips on to the headstock. To be fair, I just bought it a few months ago and it's the first and only one I've ever used. I bought it because it was the cheapest one I could find ($30) but I've been pretty satisfied with it. It struggles a bit to give a reading on lower strings but usually responds to the harmonic on the 12th fret.

Thanks! I just ordered the IMT-500. It has a needle so I can temper the 3rds as needed. (I know. That could probably lead to a heated discussion :)

I have tried many tuners over the years on a variety of instruments. For my money, the Intelli IMT-500 can't be beat. I really like how stable the needle is. Nothing is worse than having a needle jumping all over creation when you're trying to tune. It's easy to see the scale, stable, well lit, easy to operate, can be used on many instruments and it stays put on your instrument. ...AND it's a good price.

Another thing I like about the IMT-500, it has a "flat" button on it so if you use a capo say on the 3rd fret, you tap the "flat" button 3 times and you can tweak your strings with your capo in place to standard tuning. You can also fret or bar a note at any fret and it will tell you what that note is (if your intonation is on or off on the reso). Great for building chords and scales. Gotta love this new technology :-0

Another Korg fan here. Much more accurate than the Intelli. Now if only it glowed in the dark like the Intelli, and the Korg would be perfect!

Dreadnaughty - Posted - 11/13/2008:  08:01:36

The Korg is definitely the best. It is the only one that works accurately in loud and onstage environments. The needle can be jumpy but usually because you are jumping out of tune. Extremely precise tuner, and it comes with a case and looks like a robot. It is a lot more money though and has no backlight so you can't see it in darker places like the imt-500. But the Imt-500 lies, my ears have told me.

An interesting topic......I have tried a number of clip-ons and altho I really like the IMT-500, I found that the Cherub WST-523 works the best on both of my reso's. I found it quite by accident on EBay a few months back so I bid on it ($15 to my door). I liked it so well that I bought a second one. Depending on the reso neck construction, I notice that most clip-ons do not pick up the 6th string (non-mic mode) so I clip the tuner on one of the left side tuner keys to get that string to pitch.

Mark one down for the korg ... although I do miss the light of the IMT, but those IMT's seem to have a life span of about three weeks and I am not talking battery life.

Hi Randy and all --

I am doing fine with the Intelli IMT 500 tuner. For the price, and what you get for that price, they are hard to beat.

There are a couple of things about them, though... First off, the batteries do wear out pretty fast. This is especially so if you keep the tuner in your pocket, and you accidentally keep hitting the "on' button. This makes the light go on, and all, and eats up battery life even faster. Another peeve is that the battery door comes off a bit too easy. Sometimes I fish the tuner out of my pocket, then the battery, then the door. One last thing, I had one that buzzed, or rattled a bit. On a reso. guitar, buzzes can sometimes be hard enough to find. When I tracked that one down, I was relieved that I found that buzz was coming from the tuner. I got this same buzz while tuning my mandolin too, which was weird, because it never buzzed before!

I noticed a couple of other guys at ResoSummit that were dealing with this buzz problem with these tuners too, so I guess it might be a bit of an issue.

Wow! After all that, it sounds like I don't like them, but I really do. They are inexpensive, easy to use, relatively accurate, and durable enough. The light is a big plus, too, in my book.

I am a fan of the Intelli IMT-500 too. Great tuner for the price. As was brought up before, it does sometimes have trouble picking up some strings, but if you hit the 12th fret harmonic, clears it up right away.

Life''s too short - sit back, relax, and enjoy the music!
