Hey Gang,
The Beard bars are no longer available. Same with Charlie's and Bradley it looks like. The Scheerhorn and EG Smith bars unfortunately don't fit my hand very well. Is there anything else out there today apart from the Shubb, Dunlop and Stevens?
Seems like there used to be a few people offering custom bars made to order, but I can't find anyone offering this today. Am I missing anyone? Ideally I'd like a bar with similar specs as the Dunlop Long Dawg but with sharper edges.
Any advice would be appreciated,
Max

At the last Resogat in July, Charlie still had his tone bars available. In the past, he did custom bars for a small increase in price. You might try Emailing him at his capo web site.

I spoke with Ron Tippton and he will soon have bars available. He said the best way to contact him is via email:
rt-bars@roadrunner.com
He has three different versions and they are chrome plated brass. Great bars!

Ron Tipton keeps threatening to retire but every so often he puts out another small batch of bars, but you gotta be quick - they sell out fast!
David Maulik, who I believe is Bobby Poff's son-in-law has been making slides, though apparently they aren't in stock right now. The only thing is they look pretty close to a Scheerhorn bar (which I like), so if that's not your cup of tea then perhaps it's not a good option.

I really like my Asher bar, but I use it mainly for electric lap steel rather than dobro. The reason is that it's a little heavier than most of what is out there, on par with Charlie's bar. I'm not as comfortable with it on fast dobro moves, but I do a lot less of those on lap steel.
Sharp edge on one side and rounded on the other, and chrome plated - slick.

Thanks again! Just what I was hoping to hear.
Good to hear that Charlie is also making bars still. I haven't seen them listed online anywhere, so I thought he wasn't making them.
Cheers everyone,
Max

The Beard is my favorite by far and all I've used for the last several years. I should've bought two at the time but that's life. I purchased a Maulik as a secondary about a year ago, and it's a very nicely made bar. I haven't yet taken the time to get used to it though- it's a little fatter than the Beard.

I find that the Tipton 1 the best bar if you have big hands and long fingers like me. It’s the only bar I could find that worked for me, and they are wonderful bars.

Thanks! I got in touch with Charlie who made me a bar (had the tracking number within a few hours!), but I'm tempted to try to get a hold of a Tipton as well. I'll try that depending on how the Charlie bar works for me.
Many thanks again!
Max

My immediate assessment of Charlie's bar: BOY IS THIS THING HEAVY!
My next assessment: Sounds good; let me experiment with it...
Current assessment: Still "experimenting" going on 5 years with no other bars used.
I hope you also find Charlie's bar good for you. And prepare to change your mind a handful of times as you build your bar "collection".

FWIW, Greg Boyd House of Fine Instruments shows EG Smith "smooth" bars in stock (I realize they don't fit the OP's hand, but others that might be looking). There does seem to be a scarce amount of steels available these days.

Exactly the same for me. I thought that it would slow me down, but even with Charlie's bar my left hand is faster than my right.
