I'm working on a scratch built Dobro project. I am about to rout the hole in the top for the cone. I'm using a Scheerhorn cone, which has a 10 17/32" outside diameter. How much extra clearance should I leave for some "wiggle" space for the cone to drop in? The body will have the open post design.

This blueprint may be helpful.

Thanks Howard. I do have that print and I've built two instruments from their previously available kits. My current project is a hybrid based on Beard / Scheerhorn specs. I drew the plan myself. It's an enjoyable hobby for me at my age.

My recollection (only a recollection) is 1/8 inch clearance around the circumference is adequate.
I'm not sure if I'd trust my memory though. :-)

I decided on 1/16" extra clearance, which gives me a 1/32" space all around the circumference. I think that should be adequate given accurate placement of the bridge.

You'll find out when the cone flexes under tension.
Have fun.

Will Do Howard. I can always string it up before applying a finish/ attaching the coverplate and rout out some extra clearance is necessary. The Scheerhorn cone is a little larger than some others and the cover screw holes will be drilled pretty close to the opening edge with the clearance I've got now.
Thanks for your input.
