DoubleShot equipped Natl Scheerhorn joins my Beard MA-6 on the dual tuning roster.
Very happy with it! Initial thoughts…I actually think it sounds better with the added mass. I’ve defaulted to Open D / GBDGBD combo on this one, but may experiment.
Kudos again to Byrl Murdock, who once again did a stellar job. This one wasn’t a drop-in with the rolling nut, so a bit of shaping was required.
Byrl also did some great tune-up work on an OMI Dobro, so couple jobs done while I was there.
Couple photos below.

Cool deal Jamie!
Byrl is doing some great work and he strikes me as being a really good guy. I wish I knew someone out here in NorCal who has a Byrl that I can check out up close and personal.
I'm guessing during your visits to the shop you have been able to play some of his guitars - What did you think of them?
And aside from the DoubleShot setup on the Nati-horn, did he do some additional work to where you notice a difference in the sound? I would imagine that blonde Dobro really benefited from the operation.

Mark, I did test drive the Byrl Rob Ickes Signature while visiting. Outstanding instrument for sure. Probably the most responsive instruments I’ve ever played. I can see why Rob makes it his main axe. And the workmanship is stellar.
As far as the blonde OMI…yep, he brought new life into this one. Replaced the tuners with a set that makes it feel more sturdy and robust, and holds tuning. Made up a bridge saddle with new slots. The nut had started to work loose so repositioned and set that in. We kept a Scheerhorn cone in it, as I already have two Legend-equipped resonators, and wanted to keep a different sound on this one for more old-timey playing. I had been experiencing an odd “chirp” when pick-blocking the second string, and his tweaking completely resolved that issue.
Byrl is a gem of a luthier, and a true gentleman.

JC: Glad you like the Double Doubleshot! Have you found a case to your liking?
Yes, Byrl seems like the real deal. Seen a few of his guitars and they are stellar.
Also this may be the first time in the history of Reso Hangout where "Scheerhorn cone" and "old-timey playing" have been used in the same sentence!

Haha...yep, I'm going to buy that case you recommended for the Natl Scheerhorn w/ DoubleShot.
Well, it's sounds more old timey with the Scheerhorn cone than with any of my Legend axes. Anything I play with a Legend cone sounds about as full/modern as they come. (Incidentally, we put a Legend cone in my Natl Scheerhorn...we both thought it sounded better...don't tell anyone...)
Byrl was leaning toward a Legend cone for the OMI as well, but I had to remind him I had that tone covered already. He said something to the effect of "ah, OK, I totally get it..."
Keep in mind as well, the OMI is thin as a pancake, so that contributes to the more vintage sound also.

One observation after playing on the metal rolling nuts for a couple months now.
Specific to pull-offs…
I don’t quite get the same penetrating, crisp pulled-off note as with a bone nut. It’s almost like the metal dissipates some of the sound waves instead of converting them into primary sound, if that makes sense. Or maybe it’s due to all the added total metal mass of the DoubleShot assembly system.
The difference is barely noticeable, but I can tell.
It is small compromise in order to achieve all the benefits of the DoubleShot system.
Perhaps I’m the only one?
