Does anyone here have a Dobro made by Mr Adams? I have a kit that was given to me by someone here, when my Dobro's came up stolen. I have him building me one now. A great man to work with.

I guess you're saying the guitar in the photo above is one that James is building for you right now - and not the kit.
I was in a Guitar Center in the Bay Area a few years back and I bought an Adams that they had taken in trade, pretty inexpensive - because it's a "project guitar" in need of work, which I have yet to get done.
Your post reminded me that I need to get a hold of James. This might be one of his kit guitars, I'm sure he'll let me know.

I have two Adam’s guitars. One is a carbon fibre that I absolutely love. I never saw that coming, because I just assumed carbon fibre would sound harsh or tinny, but it has a beautiful warm tone. The other is one of his kits, which, after many years, is still in its original state. Long before I even noticed what a dobro was (I was a guitar/banjo player), my husband decided he wanted to learn dobro. He went on eBay and bought a Wechter Scheerhorn. He quickly bought two more, one a Dobro Swatzell model, the other a Wechter Scheerhorn Elite, which Tim Scheerhorn said was one of seven that he and Abe Wechter partnered in making before their partnership dissolved. Before any of those arrived, he decided he wanted one of Adam’s’ kits so he could have a custom finish on one. By the time they all arrived, he changed his mind about wanting to play and they sat for years until I picked one up! I still have the Elite but sold the other two eventually. I have no idea what to do with the kit, as no luthiers here know much about resos. It’s birch, and I already have a birch MA6.

Question: does anyone know if Adams has a functioning website these days and can post the link? I was googling earlier and came up empty. I want to find out more about the project Adams I picked up at Guitar Center. It's been sitting in a closet for a few years and I need to kick myself in the butt and get it back to playing condition.
If no website I'll settle for an email address and a phone number.
As far as the carbon fiber Adams, I remember when you ordered that Sue. If I recall correctly it was to be a travel guitar. Pretty high end to stash in the vehicle compared to something like a frugal'horn!
I've never played a resonator of any style made of carbon fiber. But I have played flattops from Composite Acoustics (CA) and Rainsong and I would be happy to own any of them, they've all sounded really good to me. I haven't seen Blue Highway live since Rob left the group to form the duo with Trey. But I saw them live a number of times and Tim Stafford, one of my favorite guitarists, usually had his CA on stage. If I closed my eyes I couldn't tell the difference between the CA and a dreadnought made of wood. He has a bunch of really nice guitars but they usually stay at home, or at least they used to.
With a carbon fiber flattop one could leave it out on the backyard deck overnight in the rain, then you could wipe it with a towel the next morning, tune it up and you're good to go.
Sue, I'm sure between Victoria, Vancouver, and Seattle you could find a luthier who could construct the Adams kit if you really wanted to get it done. I don't think one needs to be an experienced reso luthier to complete the job, but it would be a bonus if they were.

Good memory, Mark, that was purchased as a travel guitar that we could leave in the car in California heat. James Adam’s lives in Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston. He has an active Facebook page, so you can likely reach him that way. We picked the reso up from him on our way to Houston visiting friends. He and his wife were lovely, and Jim played music with us for quite a while.

There isn't much info on his Facebook page, mainly a handful of photos of guitars he has built.

Jim produces excellent guitars. I played several at his home a few weeks ago. I purchased one of them—had to have it. I almost purchased one of the carbon fiber guitars too, but I’m currently building a project.

Several years ago, I traded a mandolin for a completed Adams Kit. I was told at the time that is was partially completed by the trade partner and then shipped back to Mr. Adams to be completed as my trade partner lost interest in finishing it himself. So maybe that's an option for those with kits in their closets-lol. I eventually sold it due to hand problems that had persisted for a couple of years (not as big an issue today so I'm back at it). All in all it was a good instrument. Plus I've replaced the mando with a close to identical one-but that's a different story......
