In advance, I appreciate any help that anyone can offer me here.
I've been playing a pretty mediocre resonator for a while now and love dobro music. I've been lucky enough to inherit a small amount of money recently, and I want to buy a good dobro. I am in a position to spent in the range of $3000 to $4500 range. I am in Ireland, where dobros are as rare as hens' teeth, and it is not possible to go and visit dobro shops or makers.
I like the sound of Rayco resonators. Can anybody offer any suggestions on a good make of dobro that is also good value please, . Much thanks
J in Ireland

Some years ago I invested in a custom built Appalachian. I'd never seen nor even heard one but took a chance based solely on Reso Hangout comments, which were all positive. It's been a wonderful instrument, so I'll start your list with 1 vote for Appalachian.

Thank you so much Wayne. I'll look them up right now. John

There are also some really nice used guitars that come up for sale periodically. Check out the link below to a stunning Beard E Model in Nashville. Buck Reid is a famous pedal steel player who is selling it for friend.

There is a Rayco on here for 2K. That would allow you a little extra for new cone and setup....

If it's advantageous for you, Thomann in Germany is a Beard dealer. They currently list quite a few models.

There are plenty of possibilities in the States if you are willing to pay the overseas shipping cost.

I went to the YouTube video the seller made and even with an old cone it sounded pretty good to me -  a recording like that can sound good, but if there isn't another guitar in the same video for comparison then it's a little difficult to make a really accurate assessment.

Many years ago I played a couple of  very low serial number Raycos, lower than the one for sale which I believe is #21, and I thought they were just okay.

Even with this #21 R body from 2004 I think Mark @ Rayco was still in the process of getting it dialed in. The guitars he has made in the past 10 or so years are just killer, because he has evolved as a builder. He typically builds the large body style that is the most popular among modern players.

The moral of the story is if one can swing  up to $4500 for a guitar as John stated in his original post, why stop at $2000?
