Posted on the ResoGat Facebook page, here also for those who aren't on FB:

Hey all! I'm happy to be bringing a workshop to ResoGat that I call "Sound System Survival for Reso Players". The session will be Thursday, July 6 at 11 AM. I'll be discussing mic selection, placement and technique, monitor placement, EQ, system equipment and setup, single mic vs. multiple mic, practical tips for easier gigs, etc.

Do you have any specific questions pertaining to live sound from a reso player's perspective? If so, please add your comments and I'll incorporate them in the presentation as best I can.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Sounds like a great idea!

Sounds interesting. I’m a sound technician for bluegrass festivals so I always enjoy related subjects.

I have worked with Dave as an assistant at ResoGat and he knows his stuff when it comes to live sound. If you are at ResoGat this is one workshop you do not want to miss.

Great idea Dave.

We saw Rob and Trey a few weeks ago here in Sonoma County at The Mystic Theater, a popular venue in Petaluma. They opened for the legendary Rodney Crowell (who at 72 sounds as good as ever) and they were part of the band when Rodney took the stage. It was a great evening of music!

I have now seen Rob & Trey six times, But this  was the first time since prior to the pandemic.

They were fantastic as usual, but I wasn't real stoked about Rob's sound. It was the first time I have seen him playing his Byrl signature model, and also the first time I have seen him using a  Fishman Aura Spectrum rather than through the Jerry Douglas Aura pedal. As I recall, since he plays dozens of different venues over the course of a year, he feels the Spectrum is better at controlling feedback in certain situations.

No idea if it's the images in the Spectrum as compared to the JD Aura pedal - or if it was the sound man - but I doubt that  it's the guitar. Something was off a little  on his dobro sound, and  everyone else sounded fine.

I suppose I'm more tuned in  to concert sound quality with the dobro to a greater degree than with other instruments - but to my recollection Rob's sound with his Scheerhorn run through the JD Pedal in his first several years playing with Trey was a little superior to the sound of the Spectrum.

These dobros are fickle beasts when it comes to amplification  - wish I could be there for your workshop Dave!

I have both an Aura pedal on my big pedalboard, for most gigs, and a Spectrum, for "all in one, grab 'n go" gigs (it has tuner, DI w/XLR, feedback suppressor, compressor).

The images on the Spectrum are quite audibly lacking compared to the straight JD Aura, but are more than good enough for most things....the audience won't know, or care, that it could have sounded a bit more like a high-end naked dobro....

I do wonder why the supplied images, and the add-on user images you can download, just aren't the best...I guess that getting JD and a bunch of high-end mics and sound folks to generate the Aura images actually made a difference...

There is the old expression: Your output will only be as good as the inputs

Remember that is was the late Bil Vorndick, who sadly passed away not quite a year ago who did the recording of the images for the JD Aura pedal. Bil was one of the most respected engineers (and a producer as well) in Nashville for decades. He also had what was possibly the finest collection of microphones anywhere, many which were vintage and sell these days for shocking prices on the used market. In the articles I have read he recorded Jerry playing with the mics placed at a variety of locations and distances in the room. They didn't just knock this thing out one afternoon. That had to be a lot more effort combined with superior equipment than the dobro images on the Spectrum unit.

Bil also took on a major project some years ago when he recorded images for the Martin Performing Artist Series of guitars with onboard Aura control. You gotta figure he didn't work for cheap on those sessions.

At the recent Rob & Trey (with Rodney Crowell) concert there were a few other dobro players in the audience. This venue has a capacity of 550, but if there were less than a handful of people that were thinking Rob's dobro sound wasn't quite as good as when he was using the Douglas pedal in the chain, then I guess dobro geekdom is pretty low on on the list of priorities.
