I have not read that many comments on the Harlow Jumbo Cherry. Do many people own one or used to? Love to hear comments on these dobros Frank makes any model but specifically the Jumbo Cherry.

Thanks!

Have you looked in the reviews here?

MarkinSonoma - Posted - 09/10/2023:  15:48:58

We have a number of members here who own Harlows. Go to the Search function on the left side of your screen (the magnifying glass icon) and type in something like "Harlow." You will find plenty to read going back to the early days of the hangout which was founded over 15 years ago.

They are excellent guitars. If you purchase a Harlow those Regals you picked up will be relegated to campfire duty.

Petros, "A" for effort on the attempt at researching Harlow - sorry that it didn't get you the results you want.

Hang in there, some Harlow playing members will surely chime in.

You're in Chicago (in my final job prior to retirement my division was headquartered in Lisle - have been there several times) and Frank is in Vandalia, OH near Dayton. Four hours plus drive - you should set it up with Frank to pay him a visit. We keep hearing he is going to totally retire, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I suggested to one of our members several years ago who lives near Frank to contact him for setup work on an import reso - when he was there he ended up ordering a guitar.

Thanks Mark. I do hope to hear from some Harlow owners!

PBS did a documentary on Frank Harlow and his resonator guitars in 2017. It's available for download at amazon.com for about a buck if you are interested

One of the greatest players ever IMO on a Harlow jumbo cherry.

badger - Posted - 09/11/2023:  06:48:37

Great playing - thanks for posting! I believe he's playing his standard-body walnut - I had one that was made from the same log. Still kicking myself for selling it.

He's playing a jumbo cherry, per the video description. I'm not sure what size his gold walnut Harlow was.

My mistake, sorry. It's early here, and the caffeine-brain connection hadn't fully worked out.

Thanks again for your replies. jmike I saw the documentary very nice. If I recall correctly that jumbo cherry was built for Gene sadly 6 months before he passed and Frank has it at his home along with the walnut one Gene played for I believe 15 years? Gene was such an amazing player my personal favorite glad these vids were posted thanks again gadobro.

I own both a Harlow jumbo cherry and standard maple.

I have three $500 Chinese guitars that Frank has, “tuned up”. He fixed a biscuit and tricone guitar. They play much better after Frank touched them. I also have a wreaked mahogany plywood Black Lightning he resurrected as a travel guitar.

I am in Dayton Ohio. Vandalia is 10 miles north of me.

I can tell you Frank makes a good Resonator.

I would call him and drop in. He will let you play Gene Wootens jumbo cherry.

Mine is the same guitar except for the “Bling” on his.

Last time I talked to him he was sort of ready to retire. Don’t wait too long.

Thanks for the info and I did call Frank and I'm going to see him later this month not that far from Chicago. Yes he said he would let me play Gene's guitars that'll be a thrill. And I am taking him something to set up I'm certain it'll be way better when he's done.

Getting Frank to set up an instrument is, in essence, a gateway drug. His work on my Mike Auldridge quickly turned into a custom order...

I own a Harlow Cherry that I've had a number of years now and I really enjoy playing it. Had a gig this last weekend and it mic'd up real nice and sounds great.

I love mine. Mine is used in studio, not live. Believe it was the second one Frank made. Gorgeous sound and consistent strings 1 through 6
