I'm hacking a couple Regal resos getting good results but one thing is the regal import spider (6.2 oz) sucks. I tried bending legs but not really having luck (fear of breaking a leg). Seems really rigid and not bendable even a little bit.

I'm going to buy Beard's #14 as soon as they are ready. They say they hand curve and then level each before shipping but on my Regals there's bound to be need for some leveling. So some questions:

On a Beard #14 when leveling a leg does it bend noticeably when you work on it? That is you feel it giving some?

Do you find the Beard #14 is usually ready to go without adjustments? (Given a high quality guitar being the subject of a cone change).

Beard used to offer leveling for an additional $5. Don't know what their policy is now, but out of stock at the moment. You might consider Replogle spiders. Two versions: traditional and contemporary with a different alloy for brighter. Also light like the #14.

I can't remember where I learned this (maybe Gregg McKenna) but if you have a leg that is higher than the others, place the spider on a solid surface like a work bench. Let the leg that is high, hang over the edge of the bench about an inch. Tap it with a hammer, then check. If it didn't move, tap it a little harder. No guarantees but it worked for me.

Thanks I'll try my rubber mallet

I do the same as Dan, but use a small plastic mallet. I use a light/short whipping motion on the mallet. A rubber mallet probably has too much give. As a result, you might have to smack the spider harder to compensate and risk breaking a leg. (In the bad sense, not the good sense).

I looked up "small plastic mallet" and it wasn't at all clear to me what would be a good choice. More information is needed.

Gabby at Resophonic outfitters just told me they do pre-level all spiders before shipping out and that "very soon" they will have a large shipment coming in.

Ah good advice I have not tried the rubber but I can see your point. Is this something like what you use?

Yes, except mine is lightweight. Gentle tapping is more important than the specific tool. Tap lightly...check....tap again....check. If no change tap a little harder....etc.
