How unimaginative....they're just copying the presentation of every single one of my shows!! No matter, but I hope the sound live was better than the recording which sounds like mud.  Another interesting aside....Mark was just searching intently for that L-body not too long ago.

I'm not going to say they are not worth that much but I'd like to see a post from somebody who accually paid between $12,000 and $16,000 and hear why from them. There are a lot of opinions from people as to why they are worth that much but I've never heard from somebody who paid that much.

I suppose that's a question for any guitar player that pays more than...let's say, 5K , for an instrument.

Condition: A mint-condition instrument that includes its original case and parts commands top dollar. Any modifications or repairs, even those expertly performed, will likely reduce the value. The value drops off sharply for guitars rated in “good” or “fair” condition.

Rarity/Demand: These two factors often go hand-in-hand. As mentioned above, however, there are many specialty collectors willing to pay more for a less in-demand guitar if it fills a missing spot in their collection.

Well you can buy some pretty nice sounding and looking reso’s for 3-5 grand. I can’t see how 10 grand more improves the sound that much. Seems out of touch to me, but what do I know. Best of luck to them anyway.

Mark Lavengood has a nickname - don't know if he still goes by this moniker: Huggy Bear

He's  a funny guy. I have seen a couple videos of him playing dobro in live performances where he decided to forego wearing  pants - just his "tighty whities." Maybe he's the closest thing we have to Chris Farley in the dobro world. 

"Provenance" definitely counts for something in the value of musical instruments. Think for example of the legendary mid 1930s Regal-built Dobro Model 37 played by Mike Auldridge for many years which Mike left to Paul Beard. 

But a guitar that was played one evening only on stage with Billy Strings?  For myself anyway, that doesn't affect the value of the guitar.

About the Squier vs. original Strat. I've played a Squier Telecaster next to a ca. '70 Telecaster, and there is definitely a difference. Maybe not a thousands and thousands of dollars difference, but still quite noticeable.

PS- I lucked into a vintage Style 2 /12 National Tricone, and later wrote National Guitars to ask what that engraving upcharge from a Style 1 would be today. They said $1000. So, to the value factors one might add "Cosmetics".

Oh, I know, my old bandmate has a '65 strat. He bought it in '65. Everything is still original.

Collectible vs playable is a whole nutha thing.

My guitars that would be considered "collectible" have only gone up in value since I bought them.  I hope my widow doesn't dump them cheap when I kick the bucket in a Inabell Sale! (greg brown reference;-)

I had a '77 Thunderbird bass some years back, and it came to me without the original pick guard. When I later sold it (sob!) through a friendly local music store that affected the price; they said one with original pick guard and a neck too warped to play would have sold for more. On the plus side, I paid a bargain price for a Fender D-8 thanks to a refinish and missing knobs. I'm happy with a player, so that worked out well.

Of original Scheerhorns there are way more maples that show up used. Rosewood/spruce is a pretty difficult find. That said, some folks make enough money , particularly in some regions of the country that the price range doesn’t seem to be that big of a deal to them.
