Recently picked up a real puzzle. This guitar has the El Monte "Dobro db" badge and is in crazy good condition. Based on what I have read in Mark Makin's book, it could be one of the guitars Ed Dopyera assembled from pre-war parts in his El Monte shop 1960 or shortly after. Very eager to hear what folks here make of this incredible sounding mish mash.
The neck is California stamped 968, dot at the 17th fret.
The cone is stamped, four hole, pristine. The spider is flat in the center, with faint #14 stamp.
The body is a mystery to me. Regal 27 with the three holes added? The center hole seems higher than normal and beveled edges a bit rough. 3.25" deep at lower bout. It had a different neck at one point and holes and markings that indicate the split trapeze tailpiece.
The coverplate is stamped patent pending, 12 o'clock screw pattern
The coverplate and tuner screws are old phillips head and the tuners might be the only thing I see that may not be pre-war.
How did this all come into being? Did Emil Dopyera himself put it together?
The guitar really sings...but I wish it could talk!
