When I joined my first bluegrass band as a novice banjo player (Tricounty Ramblers) we had a dobro player, Big Walter who played this tune. He had a Shobud Reso with playing card motifs on it.
Your version of Pickaway brought back memories of hearing that Shobud and me supporting Walter in banjo.

Mike Auldridge popularized Pickaway as a dobro instrumental when he included his version on his first solo LP in 1972 or thereabouts. The tune was composed as a banjo showpiece by Vic Jordan, then playing banjo with Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass. Jordan recorded the tune on a Nashville Grass LP, and on that recording Josh Graves plays a dobro break that may have inspired Mike regarding the possibilities of the tune for dobro.

good call, Andy! I'd heard the earlier version with Josh playing a solo on it, but since Mike's recording of it is so iconic I decided to advertise it as such. Gotta do the whole "search engine optimization" thing, but you're quite right that Vic Jordan composed it. Thanks!
