I've been having good results with CatTongue grip tape. $12.99 for a multi-decades supply. I just cut to shape and stick it on. Not only does it improve grip dramatically, but it reduces that "cold steel" feeling when first picking up the bar to play. Feels like you're warmed up already, if that makes sense. A little piece on the butt of the tone bar can also help with anchoring reverse slants (if you use the thumb pivot technique).
A warning though: The adhesive will come off with Goo Gone (in my experience), but it's a royal pain. YMMV.

I treat this like I would grips on a golf club. Requires changing once or twice a year (for me), but much easier than regripping a club.

Cool stuff - I'll have to try it. Feel sorry for the cats, though...

Hmmm, do you use slants? I'm wondering if it helps or is a hindrance when you have to change to different finger positions on the bar.

Yep I slant pretty much every time I play. Mostly forward slants, occasionally reverse. Haven't noticed much difference either way, possibly slightly easier because the thumb will plant better when I press in to pivot the bar (see photo). I don't use grip tape on the top of the bar, so the index finger still slides up and down easily as needed. (I arch the index finger when slanting).
The CatTongue just reduces the slickness as compared to steel or chrome...it doesn't negate the ability to maneuver the fingers on the bar.

I have been using padded blister tape for the same purpose, and it works very well.
