I was just turned on to this album and am loving it. I've read that Mr. Barber was fond of DeNeve guitars, but I'm wondering if anybody knows what he was playing on this album.
Thanks for any information.

Wow, I am just listening to this album, now. Junior was so great. The whole album is on YouTube. youtube.com/watch?v=InAbhKtDD4A

A friend of mine who has a DeNeve says it looks like one on the cover.

Thanks for the info! I discovered this album via a list of recommended reso recordings at the Steel Guitar Forum and it's becoming a new favorite. I found a CD copy of this one and one called Steffi's Waltz at Discogs and have them on order.
I don't have any of the Gibson Brothers recordings; does anyone know if Mr Barber ever made any recordings with them? I'm looking for anything I can find with his playing now.
Thanks again, everyone.

Junior used to record and tour with his cousins in a band called "Bear Tracks", and he is on their earlier records. I met him at a southern Alberta festival when he was touring with them. Here is their website - the earlier records are the ones he was on. Phenomenal stuff. beartracksband.com

I don't know if the early albums are available still (and I couldn't get them to play on their website), but are definitely worth having. Junior was the only soloing instrument in the trio, and every track is a master class in filling behind a vocalist and soloing.

I received my CDs of Stone Bottom Boogie and Steffi's Waltz yesterday; fantastic albums. On Steffi's Waltz he was backed by most of the members of the Nashville Bluegrass Band plus Bryan Sutton and Bob Carlin (one track). The liner notes say he was playing a Beard on that album but, indeed, Stone Bottom Boogie says he was playing the DeNeve.

Thanks for sharing the info from the liner notes.
Junior was a brilliant dobroist!

Junior played and recorded with the Gibson Brothers for many years in the 90s and perhaps into the early 2000s. In the 80s he played in an upstate NY band called Mardi Gras. Junior’s son Mike is the Gibsons’ bassist and has been from the beginning. As everyone has noted, Junior had a smooth and creative style all his own that perfectly suited the bands he played in. As also noted above, and like many other pickers in the northeast, he played Deneve resonator guitars for many years.
