I am going to get a new set of strings for my 8 sting lap steel that I have not played for awhile. My tuning will be EGBDEGBD. What would be the size/gauge that would be best. The firmer the better for me.

Thank you
Doug

What is the scale length of your lap steel? Short scale length = heavier strings. Longer scale length = lighter strings.

Check out the A6th set from SIT Strings. A6th is one whole step higher than G6th, so tune them to your EGBDEGBD tuning and you'll be good to go.

Some of these will feel light, but remember, on an electric steel guitar you don't need to pick hard like you do on a Reso. No need to get too "firm."

I have ordered strings in the past from the Steel Guitar Forum because they're only  about 20 miles up the freeway from me here in Sonoma County. But SIT strings are available from a number of outlets.

I use SIT strings on my steels, and like them a lot. I order from juststrings.com

Another way to put together strings for 8 string  G6 tuning is to buy a regular 16-56 dobro set in nickel, and add a .056W or .059W for low E on string 8, and on the other E on string 4 buy a .032W or .034W.

I just did this same thing and Howard Parker suggested this .058,.056,.045,.035,.032,.028,.018,.016. It works for me. I hope this helps.

Mark, is Steel Guitar Forum still around? When I try to get on their site, I get a warning that someone is pretending to be SGF and may be attempting to get my financial info. You never know who to believe.

The SGF is down for an upgrade. Should be back up by Mon evening.

Thanks, Howard!
