How would the sound of my 90s OMI Dobro F-60 compare with the sound of a 2001 National Style 0 12-fret I'm thinking of getting?
I like the Dobro. So I'm trying to decide whether to get the National or just down a fistful of Tums.
Thanks!

I'm guessing the F-60 has a wood body and the Style O is metal? The wood body will be a bit more mellow more like an electric guitar neck pickup. The metal body a brighter, more like a bridge pickup. So, depends on what sound you want. The metal body is also louder; good for noisy venues, which is why the old bluesmen used them. But it does have a more distinctive sound; it's tricky to play a metal biscuit and not sound bluesy, sort of like playing a dobro and not sounding bluegrassy- Doable (I do both), but you have to work at it a bit more.
But the correct answer is- Have Both. As Mark in Sonoma says: it only hurts once, when you pull out the credit card.

Sounds good. Nothing wrong with sounding bluesy or grassy! And I do like loud.
Sonomark is a wise man.
Thanks! This helps.

UPDATE:
Just made an offer on the National. Standing by for a reply. Burn a candle for me!

Done! It's on its way from Columbus. Thanks again.

Enjoy, and don't forget to keep checking your back patio.
I had a console steel shipped to me a few years ago. It hadn't arrived, I made some calls, and eventually discovered that it did arrive, the UPS driver took it to the back patio, and hid it so well I didn't even know it was there. It was especially nice of him because a twin neck in a hard shell case is quite heavy.

Heh heh. Last week a FedEx guy walked through the yard in a foot of snow to put a package at our basement door. I just happened to notice the tracks and went around to see what was up.
So: Will do!

The actual MarkinSonoma version is: "You only cry once when you pay for quality." This of course, goes hand in hand with pulling out the credit card. ![]()
Post some photos Charlie when the Style O arrives.
Historically of course aligned with the blues, but there's also one of my all time favorite guitar players, Mark Knopfler - I'm a huge fanm and have been since theat day in the late seventies when I heard "Sultans of Swing" for the first time on a rainy day in my '72 Chevy pickup. MK has used a vintage Style O on many recordings.
And there was Romeo & Juliet - definitely not the blues.

Yup! And I'm done crying.
I love watching Mark play "Romeo and Juliet." It reminds me there's hope for hopeless lefties. The first time I heard "Sultans" I was driving up the Merritt Parkway somewhere near New Haven with the radio on. What a song. What a sound.
And — photos? Here you go: National Style 0

And you even get the chicken feet cover plate. Awesome.
PS- thanks for the quote correction; I'll get it right next time.

Gordon and Mark:
Thanks for the sage advice. The beagle has landed:
AND IT'S A BLAST! What a sound. What response. What palm trees! Should've gotten one of these years ago.
