I saw you also started a thread on The Steel Guitar Forum about the guitar fairly recently, and though I have a vague recollection about the name in the past, I know nothing about the builder.
It looks like they "raided" a Regal-built Dobro from the mid to late 1930s for the coverplate. An unusual style, these were pretty rare, typically found on lower priced models. There was a Model 37 for sale here in the Bay Area a year or so ago with this plate, but what was weird about this 37 is that it didn't have a soundwell.

Sure, this cover was used on Regal/Ward guitars in the 30's and some metal Dobros.
This guitar is square neck, solid Mahogany, really heavy. Fixed the cracks. Sounds OK, but waiting on a new cone. The old one looks to be a BC-1 and really caved in from overtightening. Just a curiosity from a mystery builder. I'll use it for C6.

Can't clearly read it on my screen - is "1978" written inside the back?

Okay - 1978. This guitar was either well loved or well used - or it has lived a hard life. ![]()

All three! I have a lot in common with it and we will both go around one more time.
