Hey everybody. My name is Brian Wallen, and I'm an addict. An instrument addict. I traded an amplifier for a guitar, which I traded for a Flinthill roundneck dobro. I already have a Wechter Scheerhorn 6510F squareneck that I love, so I'd been wanting a roundneck, since guitar is really my main instrument. I traded my third-string rosewood dreadnought for this Flinthill.
So, I want to get a Scheerhorn cone for it, and ebony tipped maple saddles (of course), as well as a Lace pickup, and get it all set up by Greg Hall, my luthier, or guitar tech, whatever you want to call him.
My question for you guys is, do I need to go ahead and upgrade the spider bridge to something like a Beard as well? I figure I might as well go all out, but I wanted to get some opinions before I fork over an extra $50 on top of the $170 for the cone and pup...
Thanks!
PS. If you have any arguments why I should go with a Beard or Quarterman over the Scheerhorn, or why I should get a different pickup, feel free to present them.

I have dobros with all three and they are all excellent.

Check out Beard's website, serious upgrade for a great price (may be listed under resophonic outfitters). Howie worked my Dobro and I can't say enough good things about it or them. Service was excellent, turnaround time was great and most important, the thing really sounds terrific. Give them a call, you won't regret it. Happy Thanksgiving!

While you are doing all that you should probably replace the tuners. Doing that you will have replaced everything except the box. Ask yourself if the box is good enough. My opinion would be NO. Take a look at what a Beard Gold Tone Roundneck sells for on ebay. (go to ebay and use "dobro" as a search word for musical instruments. You'll probably see that the Beard GT is very close in price to the money you're going to spend on your upgrades. I can almost guarantee that the Beard Gold Tone box is going to be better than the Flinthill box. Before you go and buy all the pieces check out the Beard Gold Tone roundnecks on ebay. You owe yourself that. BTW they are $100 to $200 cheaper than their squareneck counterparts.

SGB and everybody, thanks for the advice. I've considered this heavily. The thing is, I basically have nothing in this dobro.
I traded an amp that was given to me as a gift for a guitar, which I then traded for the dobro, so I have a total of $0 dollars in it.
The thing about the Gold Tone PBR's is that they have a 12 fret neck. That's a dealbreaker for me. I was looking at a Hound Dog Deluxe that sounded great, but the 12 fret neck broke the deal for me. I ebayed, and googled, and the cheapest Beard GT I could find that wasn't a B stock was $550.
I have $122.50 in parts for this instrument, not counting the pickup which I would have bought for any dobro, so I figure I'm probably not out much anyway. If I'm not satisfied, then I can save my money and buy a Gold Tone Beard Cutaway...
Ended up going with a Beard cone, Beard Spider, and Beard ebony tipped maple saddles. The Flinthill already has a bone nut.
