Here is another novice question. I noticed that my spider in my Regal is painted black and most better brands I see advertised are natural aluminum color. Are they clear coated? Would there be any advantage to removing the painted surface from my spider (chemically or by sanding) leaving it natural? Has anyone tried this?

Many of them seem to be sprayed with silver or aluminum paint. I don't know if it has an effect or not.. I do, however take a file to mine and file down all the rough edges and take off all the burrs. I even take a rat tail and file out the grove on the back side.

I can't think of any (sensible/legitimate) reason to remove the paint. It wouldn't make one scintilla difference in sound. If you just don't like the look you can, first deburr and remove rough edges with a mill file and, second clean it up with a cabinet sandblaster. I do this to all my reso's and then level the feet. Works like a charm.

Your spider is an imported spider I thin The best you can do is to change the spider to an 14" spider

I filed off most of the black paint from the spider and deburred it and installed new strings. It all seemed to add a little more depth to the tone and increased the volume a little. I did notice the spider went from a muted “dank” sound when I held it by the end of a leg and struck it with a screwdriver before I removed the paint to a soft sustained “ding” afterwards. I guess there was enough paint on there to kill the ring. I also took sandpaper to my cone and removed all the ridges from both sides and polished it with fine steel wool. I remove quite a bit of metal judging by the little pile of aluminum dust on my table.
