I've been playing steel guitar for about a year, and I think I want to play a reso on some songs in the country band I play with. I've got a Melobar Rattler that I keep tuned to G-B-D-G-B-D to cover Dobro songs right now, like "What Was I Thinking?" I've found some 1970's and 1980's OMI Dobros available on the Internet. I don't have any way of listening to this instruments where I live. What would you recommend? An OMI Dobro, or an import Gold Tone or Wechter? Thanks.

I prefer the OMI or Gibson Dobros because they hold their value better. They also have a little more volume in my experience. I have several of both. Each has something to say for itself.

With little chages like a new cone and bone nut, the OMI Dobros sound just fine.

OMI or Gibson dobros do not hold their value better than the best imports, by that I mean Wechters or Goldtones set up at the Beard shop. Just check selling prices on ebay. The last Gibson dobro I owned I bought for $1350 used and sold for $850 a few months later.

The market is way down just like the economy. I bought a new Wechter Scheerhorn Flamed Maple which is an outstanding guitar, from a guy on eBay for $515.
Don't bother telling me about the 6510, I don't like them.

I have an old OMI {Model 63-8 string] from the early 80s. Its ok. but for about half the money you can get a good upgraded import [ Like the Gold Tone Beards] They sound about he same[sometimes better] , are well made and the price should hold [ not go up- but hold] and you can take them to gigs without worry about ruining a collector.
