You may remember a post I made about upgrading my Flinthill roundneck. I did so, by replacing the stock parts with a Beard cone and spider, and installing a Lace pickup. I then took the instrument to my luthier, Greg Hall, who made a set of bone saddles for it (never could figure out why everybody uses wood) and set it all up.
I made a recording to demonstrate the difference. The mic was set in the same position, at the same volume both times, no EQ or processing. There is a tiny bit of distortion on the second take just because the instrument is so much louder now that it really needs a different mic placement than it did before.
Enjoy.

Wow! Don't know what you had to invest but it was sure worth it, really sounds great. Your playing is terrific in both cases but it is noticably better in the "after" recording. Look forward to some more great music. Thanx and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Hello.
I listened to the songs, and, it may be just me, but I liked the first part much, much better than the second part!? I mean, the sound of the "before" was so much warmer and "mature" while the second part sounded just like a cheap reso to me. Can't help it.
Regards, John.

Thanks for the comments and compliments everyone! Really appreciate it.
My playing is probably better on the "after" because the instrument plays better after the setup; the action is a lot lower, so I played a lot more runs and intricate stuff that would have been difficult before.
John, everybody has a different opinion. If we didn't, then it would be a pretty boring world. When I got this reso, it was strictly in mind of upgrading it. I did not like the sound of the instrument, but I basically got it for nothing (good trade), and knew it had potential. However, you would have picked it up and been satisfied with it as is. Which is a lot cheaper attitude to have.
But to me, it was almost intolerable before, and it now sounds terrific to my ears.
This is a great example of how tone is subjective.
