Okay so I am a DIY kind of Guy. Does anyone have any I ideas for making a CoverPlate. I go to Goodwill quite often and I see a lot of items that look like they would make a cover plate. Are there any web sites that describe how to make your own?

Mike, I have been interested in this for a while myself. I have heard of wooden cover plates that could be carved out. I think a lathe would give far better results than carving though. There was a builder that used actual hubcaps and if I can dig up his name, I'll pass it on.

wood is a great idea. It is much easier to shape and cut then metal. I have seen so many metal items that look like they would be good for covers or even resonator cones. How does the cover material effect tone quality?

The coverplate does not touch the music-making parts, ie the spider, cone, strings, except for the tailpiece and that is usually insulated by a strip of leather or felt. The top or a reso is so reinforced that I don't think it vibrates as much as the rest of the guitar.
Sound passes through the coverplate and should be affected by the hole pattern and material somewhat. I think a wooden coverplate would warm up the sound somewhat. A big thick chunk of steel would absorb a lot of sound, and a thin hubcap might make it sound like playing a comb. Where is the forum for comb players by the way?
