Sorry if this subject is already posted. I'm getting ready to purchase my first resophonic guitar, and I've pretty much narrowed my search down to these two models (Wechter Scheerhorn 6510R or Gold Tone PBSM). I'm leaning toward the Gold Tone because of its solid wood construction versus the laminate wood of the Wechter, but I wanted to hear any opinions any of you may have.

I can't find any sound recordings of the Wechter - but this video of Mike Auldridge and Jim Heffernen playing the solid mahogany Goldtones has really influenced me (I'm sure mine will sould just like this!!! :^)

I've owned both a Gold Tone squareneck and a Wechter Scheerhorn Ickes model, and played the various models. The tonal differences among the various models of both makes are minor. All have a Regal size body and lack satisfying bass. All are setup well and are great to learn on. Go to YouTube and search Troy Brenningmeyer if you want to watch a video of a 6510. My advice is to get the best deal you can on a used one, realizing that if you stay with the instrument you most likely will be moving on to a pro model in a year or so. You should be able to secure a used PBS or 6510 for $500-$600.

If you decide you want to go ahead and invest in a used pro model large body, you can find several for sale in the classifieds for about $2600. Under $2000, your choices are limited. Dick DeNeve builds a fine large body he sells new for $1700.

Hi Rick,

Looks like you live right around the corner from me. You can't hardly go wrong with either of these guitars. I think the GT has a bit warmer sound but money and quality match up pretty close. I've been looking pretty hard at one of these for myself but I would also consider Red Line, Phil Dean or DeNeve even though I've never heard or played either one first hand. Many of the reviews around the internet have nothing but good things to say about these resos. I have a real hard time buying something I've never played before but if the seller will guarantee your satisfaction or your money back, it may be worth taking a chance. I've Googled a lot of reso makers out there and there is a ton of beautiful stuff out there to pick from. Check out the local sponsors here on the hangout. There is a great bunch of guys here to talk to. I've been learning a lot lurking in the shadows here.
