Does anyone know where I can buy orignal tuners for my 86 Dobro squareneck
Stewmac does not list them. leegee

Dobro used different tuners at different times. They were not particular. Nor were they very good. I'd expand your search for better quality machines, and be pepared to drill new mounting holes.

I have two slotheads, a 76 and a 95. They both have Grovers
on them, and they are the originals.

Here's a nice selection for slotted pegheads.

I have O.M.I. slotheads --'77 and '86 that (used to) have factory original "plate" tuners that were utilitarian cheap.Years ago I replaced them with Shaller tuners purchased from StewMac and self installed..I don't recall having to drill new holes. You get what you pay for.Better quality tuners have better gears and working parts. WHY would anyone want to duplicate the O.M.I. originals ?? If you plan on keeping the instrument you have constant exposure to the better quality of the upgrade. If you sell the instrument you ask for a few bucks more BECAUSE you invested in upgraded tuners and the buyer recognizes the value of upgraded quality. Typically on (post-war) older O.M.I.'s there is no decline in vintage value or collector value by not having the original tuners as most buyer/collectors realize the original tuners are basic cheapest. This is one instance where it costs very little more to go first class. Almost EVERY brand available of the medium quality tuners are better than the original cheap crap used by O.M.I. from 1970 to 1997.

Tuners do require a modicum of routine maint., lubing etc.
I put a set of StewMacs garage sale tuners on a Vinyard Weisenborn copy and they worked pretty well. The originals were Chinese Grovers copies that were really bad.
I have to disagree with Tom on replacing tuners and not depreciating an older guitar. I'm a collector and I prefer original equipment. Not for playing but for resale.

We're talking OMI "vintage" here. These are "players", not "collectibles". :-)

Hey.... thanks one and all for all the info. Going to order out the Schallers tomorrow. Funny I couldnt pull up the info when I tried stewmac. Oh well ... I definately appreciate the info. "Ole Dobie" deserves the best... as we have played many a job together, and she has never let me down. leegee

OK... HERE'S THE STORY... Ordered the 0656 model Schaller tuners... the blurb on the internet says for National :Dobro".... WRONG. This model has a coller on the inside and will not let the base rest againt the peghead. I thought about drilling out the side so it would fit... but measuring the old shaft against the Schaller and the shaft would go deeper into the center by 1/16 of an inch. Called stewmac and talked to the tech... and he recommended the 4096 model.... which i have coming. Will report later if any other problems come up. leegee

OK.... See my previous topic..... 4096 tuner from stewmac arrived. Guess what?..'
shafts are 1/4 inch dia. My 86 dobro had smaller holes. But no problem, reamed the holes to 1/4 inch and the model 4096 tuners went in with no problems...
Hope this helps someone who might have a simular problem.
RECAP: Model 0656 will not work.(even tho info says for dobro)
Model 4096 will work but holes must be reamed to 1/4 inch.
