Like banjodad said a lot depends on what you want to play. If you want to play blues spanis style than a metal bodies roundneck is what you want. If you like to play dobro then a squareneck is what you want.

Regsrding a square neck, the Beard Vintage R is $2000 on Janet Davis Mysic. You can sometimes pick up a very lightly used Beard R bodied dobro with solid mahogany body for $2000 or slightly less. There is one on this site and if he still has it he may listen to an offer. resohangout.com/classifieds/de...p?cid=447 The R body is approximately the same dimensions as the original Dobros.I would avoud the E body or an 8 string. The Beard Vintage R is a great sounding instrument. The plywood body in my opinion doesn't take anything away from the sound. It does have cheaper hardware. It has the same cone, nit cover, bridge and bridge inserts as the more expensive ones and has the same setup.

OK, I am saying this, based in what I have heard from others and not first hand Knowledge. The E body is a cannon, very loud but the R body has a more pleasant tone. As I understand it the E body is for serious musicians who want the sound heard and cannot or don't want to amplify. Take it for what it is worth.

Surely most of this has to do w/personal taste/preference. I won't be able to compare it to a Beard 'R', but should have an E model here late next week & will certainly be comparing it to my current Dobro F60. Any guesses as to which sound I'll prefer?
