Hi
Im Playing a johnson Nashvillelide. Ive played it for about five years and the repertoir is mainly Bluegrass Josh Graves style. I want a guitar with better stronger volume. I have never tried the Goldtone pbs but Im intressted in ordering one. How much do I gain in volume and tone compared with my Johnson. Can anybody give me any advice. Is there a better guitar on the market in the same pricerange as the Goldtone pbs.

I don't know that they are better, but you should try out a Wechter Scheerhorn. I know it's just personal preference, but I have owned both and like the tone of the Wechter a little better.

That being said, I don't think you can go wrong with either one, as long you get the Goldtone that's set up in Beard's shop.

Within that price range, the Gold Tone Paul Beard and Wechter Scheerhorn guitars are both very good values. I own a Wechter Scheerhorn and have played many Gold Tone Beards; I'd be happy with either of them if given a choice. My deciding factor on buying the W/S was a good deal from Johnny Bellar.
You should hear a good difference in tone and volume from either of these guitars. Rob Anderlik has a series of audio comparisons of various guitars on his web site.

I think you will like the Gold Tone. If you can afford it go for the PBSM which is solid mahogany. FYI, some Gold tones are set up at Beard's facility in Maryland and some are set up at the Gold Tone facility in Florida. I have heard several people recomend the facility in Maryland. What you get depends on whether you buy from a Gold Tone Dealer (FL) or a Beard dealer (MD). You can also order direct from Beard's website. The dealer(s) on eBay are Gold Tone dealers. When I bought mine I was looking at the Wechter Scheerhorn and the Beard Gold Tone. I had a chance to play the Scheerhorn and liked it, but Scheerhorns have a bit more "modern" sound and I wanted an old fashond sound. I got lucky and found a new old stock Beard Vintage R that was 4 years old and had never been sold. beardguitars.com/guitargoldtonemain.html

If the Sheerhorn has a more moderns sound then the choice is simple for med because a want a more vintage sound. This is very important information for me since I live on an island i the baltic sea and it isnt easy for me to try them out. I just have to order one and hope I like it so it is very usefull for me to get your point of views.

Paul Beard might have some Gold Tones in his shop, you'd probably have to call or email to find out. Often he's had what they call blemished guitars there from Gold Tone, which are usually guitars with a minor finish flaw, but that have no defects that would affect playability. You can get one of those guitars at a significant discount. Or, you can get a new Gold Tone from Elderly Instruments - all their Gold Tones go through Paul's shop for set up prior to being sold. I agree that you'd be better off getting one that was set up by Paul's shop. Ones that are set up there have a sticker indicating this inside the upper screen hole.
