Looking at the insides of Old Blue's Hound Dog reminded me of something. One of the Dobro Jerry Douglas models I once owned sounded ok, but not great. One day I took the cover plate off to clean the guitar up and do a little maintenance and see what I could do about the sound. I noticed a bump in the cone, so I picked it up and got a surprise. It seems the neck stick was too long, so when it was assembled, the cone was pressed down right on top of the stick and was killing the sound. I took an X-acto saw blade and carefully cut the stick back to where it should be. Naturally, when I assembled the guitar and played it, it was like a different instrument. I found this on only one more Dobro, a D60, so take a peek in the cover plate of your OMI Dobro and see if there's a little bump in the cone, by the neck.

The first time that I changed strings after getting my Gold Tone Beard PBR-DLX I took it apart to check the spider, cone etc. The cone adjustment screw was bound-up because it was threaded into the cover plate hole. When I pulled out the cone there was a 3 inch long piece of masking tape on the bottom of it. Getting the tape off and the cone free made a huge difference in volume and tone.

Sounds like that one was built on Friday.

It surprised the heck out of me when I took the guitars apart and saw what I saw. I guess that's what happens when you have different people making different parts.
