I am looking for a recommendation for a book on music theory for a complete novice. My goal is not to become an expert, I would just like to learn enough about the relationship of the elements of music to help me learn to play the reso.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

This series runs along the "For Dummies" books, but they are called "The Complete Idiot's Guide to...". They are really a great, informative, and interesting series, which includes one on music theory. Unlike the "For Dummies" signature yellow and black cover, the CIG series have orange and blue covers. Might be worth a try.

I highly recommend Edly's Music Theory for Practical People edly.com/mtfpp.html IMO Edly is one cool dude! He has the ability to take complex subjects and make them easy to understand. The book is written in a conversational style and while I can't claim to have made an exhaustive study of the literature on this subject, Music Theory for Practical People is hands down the best book of it's kind that I've come across.

If your objective is music thgeory specifically applied to Dobro, I would recommend something that zeros in on THAT area specifically, rather than an outside book that may have more general theory or more info than you wanted.Specifically there is a 24' X 36" wall chart that has all the info at a glance.Mel Bay is the publisher and Janet Davis music is the inrernet retailer.The tan (color) chart pictures the fingerboard of a wood body reso and is based on G -tuning..It pictures every note at every position AND has also got info on the Circle-Of-Fifths relationship AND all the diagrams of SLANT chords. There is a similar product (to avoid) which pictures a metal body reso and tjhe information is all based on "D" tuning (same price/same supplier) unless D tuning is what you want.This decent size, readible, complete info chart seems simpler and more direct than buying a book on music theory. You get fingerboard diagrams that also cover chords dminished, augmented, minor,6th,7th,9th etc..When I got my chart it just seemed more Dobro concentrated than the general stuff I had seen in theory books.i
