One of my "Blues Axes" is this 1945 Stella, which I play slide on daily. To my dismay, my #1 String tuner has begun slipping...and I do not want to replace those old, corroded (Just Right, in my book!) tuners. The gear is not held on by a screw, bur rather is riveted, and there is no end screw on the plastic heads, either. I have tried deftly pinching the "ears" that hold the worm gear shaft, which is the only method I could think of, but the problem persists...

Before I pinch those shaft ears further...am I going about this properly?? I hesitate to "set" the rivet tighter, because I can't un-do that if I get it too tight. I really don't want to replace those tuners if at all possible...The Patina Thing, y'know...

I am guessing that the gear and shaft are different materials. Probably brass for the gear and certainly steel for the shaft. The only thing that comes to mind is drilling a 1/16" hole through the gear into the shaft and inserting a 1/16 roll pin sometimes called a spring pin. I would bet that there once was a tang on the shaft that fit into a groove in the gear and this has sheared off inside. I doubt that peining the riveted end would help. The only other thing I can think of is Loctite. This is a chenical that hardens in the presence of metal. There is a wicking Loctite that, if you apply it to the outer end, may wick back in far enough to lock everything together. This would be invisible. I would try that first. You may want to apply some to the functional gears also. You may be able to find it at a buisiness that sells bearings. Auto parts stores have Loctite, but I don't know if they sell all types. Another place may be business that sell industrial maintenence items.

I think the string shaft is slipping inside the gear, so the Locktite drop might be the ticket. I'll take the tuner plate off, so I can get a much better idea with the shafts, etc. all free from the guitar. There is no sign of the gear slipping in the worm...I've experienced that in the past with others, and on those I just slapped afresh set of tuners on. I even considered getting a new set of nickle plated ones and aging them with hydrochloric acid fumes.

I'll really learn a lot when I pull them off.

So, how'd you make out with the tuner?
