Has anyone ever heard of or played one of these?

I notice that there a ton of imported metal-body "National-style" instruments out ther in the under $1K price range. What are the good ones and which ones to stay away from? I have a Crafters of Tennessee maple body single cone that I really love for bottleneck-style and finger picking, but I'm interested in picking up a metal body just to have some versatility in tones. Any advice welcome...thanks.

Look for a Goldtone Paul Beard Signature. You can't beat
the sound for the money.

For metal body imports, I actually prefer republic over the gold tones. The wood body, pbgt is unbeatable, but for metal, well, I think republic kills 'em.

I second that. The Republic Metal bodies are THE real deal for under 1000$. I bought a tricone last October, and am so happy with it, that I ordered a brass body single cone yesterday!

Thanks for the tip. I like the Republic model 115 because of the 12 fret to the body and the difference that seems to make in the tone. But the 1 7/8" nut width scares me. That's an 1/8" wider than my current axe and seems extreme. Does anyone know what the back of the neck contour is like?

Don't know anything about the Republic necks but the nut width is a close match for the real Nationals I believe, they are wide.
