Johnsonsdobro - Posted - 03/03/2009: 13:44:34
Hello,
I have a gibson houndog round neck dobro and was wondering what the best string gauge would be for a delta blues sound? I am currently using elixer resonator strings, these strings are much heavier that the strings that came with this dobro. Are these strings ok?
Thank you

Depending if your just using a slide or if your fingering and using a finger slide as to which direction you want to go with strings. You definetly don't want too heavy of a gage string on a round neck. I prefer GHS strings on both my round neck and square neck reso's. 12 thur 54 on my round neck and 16 thru 56 on my square necks.
I hope this helps you. The best thing is to expirament with a new instrument and find the right gage and manufacturer that makes your instrument sound its best.
Good Luck and no matter what keep a pickin

Johnsonsdobro,
I would try a set of GHS bright bronze heavy. These are not as heavy as squareneck strings but should give you a nice reso blues sound.
Keep on pickin', prewar37

As a new owner of the Gibson Hound Dog Round Neck Dobro I've found the Ernie Ball Slinky custom gauge to be pretty good. I had been using the heavy Martin Reso strings, but I found the B string buzzed like crazy.
