I have noticed that my El Cheapo roundneck played lap style with a steel sounds noticeably better without the nut extender... but it's a little difficult to play that way without it. The steel keeps hammering on the fretboard.
The extender I have- I don't know what kind, but I bought it from Janet Davis a couple of years back- it's some kind of metal, and the reso has a real shrieky tone with it. Recorded, you really hear it. I think the regular nut is nylon or some kind of plastic, so I think it's that metal extender giving it that kind of ugly sound.
Has anyone run across a nut extender that is not made out of metal? If I were to try to cobble up one from some other material, what might be good to try?

I cobbled a nut from a cow bone I got from a butcher shop about 24 years ago.
Still on the '77 model Dobro and sounds fine. It should work for you.

You could buy a dobro nut from Janet Davis for $9.95 or from Resophonic Outfitters for $15. These are already slotted and slightly wider than the guitar nut. I did this on my Abilene roundneck

The current unsatisfactory Nut extender is usually cast aluminum or pot metal. Getting the strings to proper raised height with BONE nut, per the above advice is most common--bone giving good volume and tone. One could experiment with a hard wood which in theory would yield a sweeter tone but less volume.So building a replacement nut with a scrap piece of maple or ebony is a cheap do-able experiment, but the BONE advice is best.
