This is my first post so be gentle. I am starting too look for my first Dobro and was wondering from a purely aesthetic point of view which type hole shape is best for Bluegrass? I know Josh Graves, Jerry Douglas and Mike Auldridge resonator has round holes. Any suggestions?

That is a matter of personal taste. Do you like redheads, blondes or brunettes? I spoke to Abe Wechter and he told me the first Wechter Scheerhorns had F holes. The dealers wanted screenholes. That said, he told me in his opinion his guitars with F holes sounded a little better than the screenholes and the open screen hole sounded the best (The Rib Ickes signature model). I would say that probably more people like the screenholes than like the F holes.

I stopped in a small music store in Rolla Mo. and played a new Dobro model 60 with the F holes about 8 years ago. It was without question the best sounding new Dobro I ever played. It seems that the round holes are preferred by most bluegrass players, with or without screens. There is more in the "set up" to determine how good the instrument sounds than the shape of the hole.
We, as a group for the most part, tend to follow our leaders. If Josh, JD, Mike, and Rob set the standard with round holes, that's what we play.
The round holes seem to be the bluegrass choice, while the blues players go with the F holes. Hope you find one that makes you happy.

I have a guitar with f-holes and sometimes miss my round screens, you can use the screen as a miniature washboard with your finger pick if somethings got the chop covered already.

Thanks for all the input. Currently I am playing a rented metal body guitar so I am sure anything with a wood body will sound better. The f vs round hole question came up when Bill (a co-worker, banjo picker) thought I should only be looking at round hole resonators for Bluegrass. So I thought I would ask the experts. Bill and I are heading out tomorrow to go to a store were I can try a few different resonators. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for the good advice on the other forums, I have been reading them to get repaired.
