Has any one played the tutbro. You can see it on youtube wiith norman blake and Jens kruger. Norman blake is pretty boring and jens who is a banjo picker just kind of picks out some blues stuff. Pretty weird looking instrument with a hollow neck just looking for some reviews.

My take on the Tutbro is that it is "old history" reactivated. Preceding the Dobro in the 1920's was the Hawaiaan style guitar--by Weisenborn--with a distinctive shape and a hollow neck. Later came resophonics--the Dobro--in a standard guitar body shape. Now both have "come back" big time. There are 4-5 luthiers building weissenborn shaped hawaiaan guitars--and they can be seen on you-tube as a "new" fad. Now think about the appearence of the Tutbro. Tut Taylor has simply created a (maybe salable) fad instrument. Look at it-- A Tutbro is simply a Weissenborn BUT with a cone and reso system inserted. So it is 1920 meets 1928 and then RE-BIRTHED to a whole new generation who never played a weissenborn. It is a Hawaiaan guitar that is actually a dobro but preceded the Dobro by eight years. Is it worth the $1900 asking price ??? Or is Tut Taylor playing a grand joke on a whole new young generation ???

I had the pleasure and honor of meeting Tut and Jens and quite a few of Tut's extended family last year and playing a number of Tutbros with them in an extended jam session/BBQ. Everyone had a turn at playing them as well as the other makes of resos that were there (a Wolfe ported reso, a Dobro and a few Crafters of Tennessee). The Tutbro held it's own with those guitars. One of the main things I liked was the guitar sits nicely on the lap and was easier to play than the others for that reason.
I played early prototypes and later production models and the finish was up to the Crafters standard. The Tutbro had a resonance that was hard to describe (weissenborn-like?) but I found it to be a pleasure to play with great lows, and excellent midrange and sweet highs. I had just travelled down to NC from Washington where I had a lesson with Mike Auldrdige, played a MAS6 there (with the new adjustable bridge), I loved that guitar as well so whilst the comparison was not quite side-by-side, it was within a day or so..
I may have been biased because I was with Tut at the time but I liked the Tutbro that much I was considering buying one - I didn't because I had another 5 weeks of touring the States, Canada and Hawaii and it would have been trashed by the airport luggage gorillas by the time I got it back to Australia. I thought the asking price was $1200 with gig bag?
Whilst not a review as such, it is my subjective opinion that it is an instrument worth considering. My $AUD0.02 worth
