Hey yall. I looked all over the forums and thought I would give the Lace Ultra Slim acoustic pickup in my Gold Tone PBR Deluxe. The bad news is right after I ordered it I read that it was too wide to fit between the rings on my PBR. So I did the only thing I could think of...grinded them down! It actually turned out pretty nice. I took some photos of the process and have it all back together. The wire going into the sound hole is now pulled in tight and out of sight. I'll get her turned back up and plugged in and report back on how it sounds. The kids are asleep so I haven't tried her out yet but I will in the morning.

WOOOOOOOOOO!
You know my reso friends would say, "why do you need a pickup? It's already loud." but I'm know I'm th kind of person that just has to keep pushing it.And when I listen to the old blues stuff they are always electrified and in your face. So why not?
I got her plugged into to my highly modified 5 watt tube amp and holy smokes! On a clean setting it is just as chimey and fat bottomed as she is naturally and with just a touch of distortion it is a swampy bluesy paradise. This guitar was fun to play before, now I it sounds like it might come out there and grab you -- fuuuuun. The ultimate upradge, minimally invasive and great tone. I'm blown away!!!

Just FYI...Keep an eye on the area around the jack. On these guitars the preferred location is where the body is reinforced, which is under the tail. There is a tail block located there. You might also try reinforcing the jack in that location with a bit of thin plywood on the inside.

Thanks for the heads up. My main occupation is RC planes so gluing wood to wood is something I can actually do.

Nice post. I've been reading everything I can find as far as pickups are concerned and I've run across the Lace p'ups on several forums. I'd love to hear it. Are you using double-sided tape for the mount? Anyone tried the black single-coil Lace?

After reading about others using this pickup from others I just pulled the backing off four corners. This pickup sounds great and has really opened up some fun options. I crank up the amp at least once a day and get the Gold Tone going. I'll see if I can get a decent recording but it is great. It wasn't cheap but I am very satisfied with the purchase.

The black single coil lace doesn't even come close to comparing. I had one, and after one gig upgraded to the ultra slim. The single coil is just way to noisy and has no output at all.

YMMV

It can sing sweet and I can also run it through my Digi GNX4 and get really dirty and ZZ topish. The negative is that my non amplified playing has become more buzzy.

Sounds fantastic!
I would like to fit one of these to my Goldtone but I don't really want to grind the sound hole suppounds.
Could it be attached to a small shim of wood or plastic to raise the level to that of the surround or will this effect the sound?
What about sticking it to the resonator cover?
Would appreciate any expert opinions on this.

one a squareneck, you can absolutely put a small wooden shim underneath so that it clears the rings. I've done that for a number of customers and it has only a positive impact on the sound.

YMMV

I do think if it was higher the bottom end would sound better. I still love it, in fact I have one on a tricone now.

I've gone to nickel strings, bottom end sounds great now.

Where do you run the lead if the sound holes have mesh in them?
Drill a hole? or can it go through the resonator cover and somehow out of the sound well above to cone to the tailpiece?

I would drill a hole through the mesh or get a set of screenless rings personally, but it's really up to you. You could replace the jack and have it bolt straight to the coverplate.

Who's rig are you interested in Billy?
