Is there a lot of difference in strings? I know there is but I want to hear what other types of strings and results that others have gotten. I use the John Pearse strings with wound third. They last longer than brass wound. I just put a set of EJ 42 Daddario's on my new Godl tone PBS and the third string broke as I was tuning it. I didn't run it up fast but slow and easy and it still broke. Anyone had any problems with their EJ 42 strings?

I substitute a .028 for the third string in the first place so I never see that problem. Up until the time I started using the .028 I used the standard .026 and found that it did'nt last long, but, the rest of the set is great. I use this set for all my new guitars. Thanks, Phil

If a string breaks just tuning up, there may be a little file work needed on the breakover points. Using something on the fret slots like graphite or pencil lead or nut sauce might help too. I've used the EJ42 set for a while and never had one break on me and I get on them whle playing.

First to answer your question, there is a lot of difference in strings. There are some with stainless wrap and they are the brightest, followed by Phosphor Bronze, white bronze, and finally nickel. The EJ 42 are a fairly bright set. My last set were Pearse Uncle Josh. They are heavy strings and the third is unwound. I did not like them. I probably liked the Scheerhorn cryogenic strings as well as anything.

Have tried Pearse, Beard Specials, Ducks, Ball, and on and on, but always seem to go back to the EJ42's. Have never had a problem with the third but might try an .028 just to see what it sounds like:)

I like Beard strings on my GT, Special 29's, or special 28s if you prefer lighter. The 28 and 29 refer to the heavier 3rd string gauge, although they are a heavy set overall.

Like Bradskey, I really like the Special 28's on my Beard, but use EJ42's on the Dobro.

I swear by EJ 42, I know lots of players complain about the 3rd string being a 26, but I have never broken one and do not find they wear faster than the others. I think the problem is that this one gets hit too hard by the thumb coming from the lower strings. Adjust your attack on this string and it won't be a problem. My second favorite or back up are the Martin Reso strings. They are the same string gauges except they are nickel. Lighter gauge strings require less tension on the cone, there for give more sustain and volume if adjusted correctly. But all instruments are different, so go with what works best.

I was using beard 28's or 29's as the mood struck me, but I tried the GHS Sheerhorn Cryogenic strings, great tone, and they last about 4 times longer. Little pricey, but I love em. I also like the gauges.
