I see that some tunings like C6 (CEGACE) are far from my usual GBDGBD tuning. I assume that you tune down. How much can you change the tension of the strings without causing poor tone of breaking the strings?

if you want a C6/Am7 tuning you have to change strings or better still have another reso in that tuning but you can get a G6 type tuning if you get your low D up to E
i use a G6/Em7 as follows BDEGBD you have to put a .34 for the 4th string , a 36 for the 5th and a 44 for the 6th ,this gives you your 1st 3rd and 5th on top and your 6th's and minors too , however you still need two guitars if you want one in standard too
i personally think that you cannot have too many guitars

Thanks. I really wanted to just have a noodle around to see how I felt about different tunings. But I could use another guitar and raise the nut. I want to avoid major surgery.

if you just wanna noodle around up your D(4th string) to E for G6 or using standard tuning go GBDEGB this is the same intervals as CEGACE you have to drop the GBD of standard tunning toEGB this makes the strings a bit slack but you get the feel of a trad 6 th:min7 tuning
also have you tried putting the top B up to C for that modal minor thing where you can play things like little maggie or clinch mtn backstep
good luck with it all
