I have a Melobar Deluex SLX lap steel which I want to learn to play as a dobro.
Can any one tell me what tunning Mike Auldridge uses.
The lap steel is currently strung with Erie Ball Strings 016, 018, 026W, 034, 042, 056. I believe these strings are for tunning as a standard quitar.
Can anyone tell me what strings I should use with Mike Auldridge's dobro audio and video lessons.

I have the bvd1 from Auldridge and he's tuned gbdgbd he does show some other tunings but as for as the strings if they feel good to you use them.I have read that he likes to use ej42's and i beleave the string sizes are the same as what you have.I like Beards 28's .Although he strings his customs with 29's. There both nice .And if the third string is wound your good to go.Good luck

Slideman suggests--the above advice on heavy strings is good and accurate for acoustic resophonic. HOWEVER this is a lap steel, presumably amplified. I always heard that lap or pedal steel was picking lighter hand touch on LIGHTER strings.I think the picup and amplifier negate the hard heavy picking on thicker strings required for the acoustic Dobro. The few lap steel players I know play a standard guitar set of acoustic "medium" OR a string of preference designated for electric guitars. In theory, the pickup is doing the heavy work for you.

I play a Gold Tone lap steel in G tuning and I like the feel of the standard heavy reso strings.
This steel is the same scale length as my reso's though, and on a shorter scale instrument, you may want lighter strings.
