Hi There
Firstly I’m new here and just want to say what a great resource this is, really enjoying going through the posts. ![]()
I have a WS Rob Ickes model and would like to upgrade the cone spider etc. I have practiced on cheaper guitars so I think I’m fine on what to do (in UK so no Pro set-up options). However i noticed something weird about the Wechter. The string height is 3 8ths at the nut, but 4 8ths at the 12th fret. So it's sloping up towards the bridge. Has anybody else noticed this? What is the effect of not having the strings level? (If any). I'm going to set it up level as is instructed in the beard DVD, but i was just curious if anybody had any comment on this?
One other thing, I bought a couple of import spiders recently to practice levelling and when I went to install one of them I noticed it was barely big enough for the cone. The legs just about touched the edge! It didn't occur to me that it would be any different than a normal #14 spider.
Anyway, many thanks
Ben

I shouldn't worry to much about the difference in height.
Beard's video I think is helpful for maintenance issues, but for set up it is still better to have someone do it for you.
Where in the UK are you?
One thing to mention about the W/S is that they will take not a standard sized cone such as the Scheerhorn, so be aware that you will either have to buy a small diameter cone such as the smaller version of the Quarterman or you will have to somehow trim or otherwise reduce the diameter of whatever cone you buy.

Hi ukpicker
Yeah i've been in touch with Beard about this and they said the string height thing was no big deal (have a goldtone like it too). I just didn't know if it was one of those small important things or not so important. I've set up a few instruments now and they've all turned out good. One hounddog now betters the Wechter for top end, which was a bit of a surprise. My motivation was due to not being able to send them to guys like Phill or Bobby, so i though i'd better learn myself. I don't think it's that hard really, just a matter of being a perfectionist and taking your time. I took a 16th off a new beard cone i have today so i'm going to try sorting out the RI model over the weekend.
I didn't think i'd have so much fun taking guitars apart. If i had the money i think i'd just be buying them to fiddle with ;-))
I'm in Birmingham by the way.
Cheers
Ben
