What do you think would look better on a new highly figured Curly Mahogany Large body reso, a Mahogany top or Bearsclaw Spruce? I appreciate your input. Thanks, Phil

I am a fan of mahogany, spruce has always been boring to me. That is just my opinion as far as looks go....
I do know that spruce is hard to beat sound wise, but same goes for mahogany!!![]()

I would say that ordinary Spruce is boring, but, this is really figured Bearsclaw.

You can't loose with either. That said, if it were mine, I would go for the Bearsclaw.

I'd make it all mohagany & put a real purty sunburst stain on it to accentuate the figure. Save the spruce for a RW or koa back/sides...
but that's just me Phil, & I'm a dummy. >grin<

The more I learn about playing this crazy thing the more I realize how very little I know about it...

There isn't a huge amount of wood left after all the cutouts and coverups on the front and a lighter color should accentuate the dark color of mahogany elsewhere. As a general rule, I have always liked darker woods like Square Neck.
Don''t squat with your spurs on.

My first reso was a mahogany roundneck with a spruce top. It was an Abilene (I believe made by Samick in Korea). Based on that (no figured grain) I would say I prefer the all mahogany.

Phil,
If it were mine I would go for the bear claw spruce, it would make a nice contrast with the mahogany. Of course, as you know, my dream guitar won't be just one type of wood either, I'm a little more exciting than that..

Philsweep, I am also doing a Curly Striped Ebony body with a Narra top and Curly Koa Binding large Body. That set of wood is killer, and the top is unbelievable. I won't be sending out pictures on it until it is complete.

Phil,
Sounds interesting. I can't wait to see the pictures. Are you building it for someone or will it be available for sale.

It will be for sale, unless I grow really attached to it like I do sometimes. Phil

Phil,
Keep me posted. I may be interested when you are done, depending on how business goes the next couple of months. My electronics I discussed with you have changed since my band uses a single mic now and no one but the bass is plugged in.

For my taste, I would say all mahogany. I have a highly figured bear claw spruce. One of the nicest pieces of wood I' ve seen. I would hate to waste such a fine piece of wood by cutting most of it out to two sound holes and another to put the cone. But that's just me. Anything that you build is going to be just very nice.

Thanks mwill, I really appreciate that compliment. I think I am going to make a change in midstream and use the Narra top on the Mahogany. That way I can use the nice Bearsclaw on the Acoustic slide I am building, and Port Orford Cedar on the Curly Striped Ebony.

I think the hog top would look very good and the chrome might look better with the darker top.

Im sorry Doug but you lost me. Splain it to me! Phil
