Will, I remember a thread on this item too. I just searched this list, and couldn't find it. Maybe it was a discussion over on Reso-Nation?
Anyway, I find this coverplate to be a fantastic feature. If you don't want a palm rest on your reso, you can simply remove it. Four #4-40 screws hold it in place, two on each side. Easy on and off.
It seems to me that a lot of players don't miss the palm rest as much as they think they would. I discussed this with Greg Booth (a pretty darn good reso. player) at the Grass Valley festival a week or so ago in CA. His new 'Horn came with this coverplate, and he plays without the palm rest. He certainly doesn't seem to miss it!
Another benefit of having this part be removable (besides playing) is that it makes it very easy to make adjustments to your bridge. You can re-file slots, or even replace the whole bridge without having to go through that whole ritual of removing the coverplate, tailpiece, etc.
I like these coverplates so much that I plan to use them exclusively on my new line of RedLine Peabody reso's, which is my version of a Big Body resophonic guitar. Guess I'd better get with Tim, and get my order in...
