Why do 8 string dobros cost so much more than a 6 string for just 2 more strings. I know there's a bit more wood and the components are a bit wider. It really does seem the extra cost is a bit over the top. I'm a newby, either there's something I've not got right or maybe people would agree.

Bill, Which ones are you comparing? The Beard MA-8 only costs $100 (US) more than the Beard MA-6. The MA stands for Mike Auldrich and I hear he plays each one (eight and six strings).

The MA6/8 cost the same.
I think the answer to the OP is pretty much supply vs demand.
Also...try to get an 8 to sound as full as a six and you'll understand the challenges.

I'm a newby, so there's a lot I don't know. I would have thought that an 8 string would give a more extended range making it easier to play giving it a better advantage. Most of the makes mentioned are not available in England. I have ordered a 6 string SX lap steel from Belgium and maybe get an 8 string in the future but if it is thought that an 8 string has none or very little advantage I wont get one. I have also bought Mel Bays book which is a bit confusing because of the different tunings. I was set on GBDGBD or C6 tuning but this has just complicated things. Wel!, as you can see, I need all the advice I can get.

I have an '8' OMI 'd' model from the 80s, its pretty nice but with 8s tunings are problem, string sizes [if you want something other than 'g'] can be a problem, and they are not popular. Beard makes a great new one [$3500], but old ones only come up every now and again.. I even saw one that had a 6 string neck on it and the 8 neck in another case. 8s are harder to play, everything sounds jazzy to your bluegrass friends and its harder NOT to play something than play it. BUT i love mine.
