This just means taking out the centre of the three mushrooms, right. Anybody done this and what effect did it have on the sound?

The moderator on the Big Road Blues site has been advocating mushroom modifications on imported tricones for a long time. If I remember right (I never had a tricone, so I didn't pay too much attention) it wasn't just removing them, but changing the arrangement and length.
He goes by the name "ricochet" and can give you lots of information on this.

There should be a forum option you can post in before your registration comes through. Ricochet, the moderator, is good at checking that and following up. He's the guy you probably need to ask about the mushroom mod anyway.

The activation mail from Bigradblues might be in your mail 'spam' folder. It is a common cause for such mails disappearing.
