I have a Tony Francis teardrop that was made in December 2014 that I'm looking to sell.
The Weissenborn is beautiful, but I've found it harder to master than I anticipated and have gotten discouraged with my practice. It is in excellent condition, with only a few tiny bar marks below the soundhole (only visible when held in the light, not deep at all). I've included a pic that shows these in the sunlight and again when viewed normally.
The teardrop is a 1930's spec with black pins and buttons, however, it's a bit of an exception as it has been made with highly figured Koa rather than the more plain wood typically used on a 1930's spec. Air dried Koa wood, hide glue construction, made with the extreme attention to detail that Tony is known for...
Tony also installed a Mag Mic pickup. A hard case is included. As is an EG Smith Tonebar, a Charlie's Capo, four packs of Newtone's 'Aloha' Hawaiian guitar strings, a copy of Andy Volk's Slide Rules, a copy of Giovanni Bailo's Lap Steel Collection (CD included), a set of ProPik's (L) and a bunch of other Weissenborn sheet music that I printed (if you are interested).
I paid $2800 USD (before shipping), plus $320 for the mag mic, and being in Australia, also had the surprise of an additional $600 in duty and even more charges thanks to currency conversions, PayPal fees etc. I think in the end it worked out to be around $5000AUD that I paid for the Weissenborn, pickup and case.
I live in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia and would prefer to keep the sale within the country, however, I am open to shipping internationally although in that case, I'd need to change the return policy to no returns and of course, you'd need to cover shipping, insurance etc.
Pick up from Ballarat preferred. But I could come down to Melbourne and meet you in the city if that makes things easier.
If you prefer the Style 1 Weissenborn, there is another listing on the marketplace from someone else who has one of those for sale for a cheaper price. In that ad, they stated that Tony has advised that there is up to a 7-year wait list on these now, and he stopped taking orders a couple of years ago.
So if you'd like a world-class Weissenborn made by arguably one of the most authentic Weissenborn luthiers alive today, this is a great opportunity. I don't have any audio samples (nor the ability to record any of sufficient quality), but if you want to hear how good Tony's instruments are, check out any Weissenborn tracks by Thomas Oliver.
Also, Ben Harper had a chance to play one of Tony's teardrops at the Acoustic Show at the Michael Fowler Center in Wellington New Zealand in November 2012 and said that "this is one of the finest instruments I've ever held".
So yeah, it's a seriously magic instrument. If you want any more info, pictures or have any questions, let me know.
Price negotiable... but I won't go much lower than what is listed here.
For pics showing the build process and the finished instrument, see the more info URL below.
