....well....among the best anyway. Have you worn out many a $5.00 ABS plastic peg winder like I have?
The pivot is the most deficient aspect of the current offering. A cantalieved force against two pieces of ABS just doesn't hold up. My Delrin and brass peg winder addresses this in the following manner. A steel axel is screwed down, ie fixed, to a brass base that holds the Delrin key shround. The Delrin handle has an oversize hole for its' full length and rotates freely on the axel. Delrin/steel/brass/no10 screws = tough. I built the first one in 1995 and have been using it since. I change steel guitar and/or dobro stings at least once a month. It shows no sign of wear. It's also very aestheically pleasing. The dark black delrin contrasts nicely with the highly polished brass. The winder is made by one person, me, here in the USA.
I've tried motorized winders. If you gig like I do they will let you down when you break a string while performing. Batteries drain and you don't know it. I can wind manually faster anyway. It's cordless!
Yeh, it cost more than the average hand winder but you'll have it forever. Most guitars take the standard size which has an opening 0.75" long by 0.375" wide. Two other bigger sizes are available. A good fit makes for a good/fast wind so a one size fits all is not offered.
