Steel Body Resos
From penndan on 5/31/2011 6:53:45 AM
So, here's what I know about building a steel body reso. I know that I'm not going to make one. I took a couple of courses in jewelry making and silver smithing in college a zillion years ago and I know what it takes to pound out complex shapes in metal and file and polish all the bumps away to get a shiny finish. I have enough trouble getting a wood guitar body smooth and shiny.
A couple of years ago I wanted to build a metal body reso from a kit but StewMac stopped selling theirs and no one else does. So i bought a Gold Tone reso with a bad neck on eBay and refit the neck. Then in a fit of bad judgement, I sold it. Recently I bought a Johnson metal reso with a bad neck from Elderly. I made a whole new neck for it and it's just about done now.
Plans for a metal Style O are available from Paul Beard at Resophonic Outfitters.
Over at the MIMF, Chris Paulick has a couple of long discussions with photos of him making a metal body tricone.
You have to be a member to get into the Library of old discussions. Doesn't cost anything to sign up.
So there, now you know everything I know.
