Hi Flatpickers

G'Day from Downunder,
Thought there must be a few folks who for one reason or another prefer to flatpick the Dobro (r). Seemed like a good idea to have a group so here it is.
Let us know how you have managed to play the dobro with a flat pick and why you play that way. For me the arthritis in my hands means the finger pick rarely get a run, the flat pick is the only comfortable way to play. I have arranged a lot of Mike Auldridge's tunes as well as some from jerry Douglas. naturally Tut's music features prominently in my playing.
It don't matter how you play it - just play!

Hey Geoff, I love to play with a flat pick. I'm not exclusively a flat picker but I guess that I play a lot more songs with one than with finger picks. I play a little of everything; blues, country, bluegrass. I first started using a flat pick when I bought Friar Tut back in the 70's. Wow, I didn't know you could do such a thing. I picked up a couple of those songs but then didn't do much more until a couple of years ago I found myself grabbing a flat pick more and more. There's a bit of a contrairian streak in me, that might have something to do with it but really, I just plain like to play with one. My favorite pick is a medium Fender 3-corner. I like the extra size and extra playing surfaces! What are you using? I look forward to hearing some of your stuff.

Great idea for a group! I keep bouncing back and forth between the fingerpicks and the flatpick. I think I let peer pressure get the best of me sometimes - guess I'm afraid of the real experienced fellows around tossing me out of a jam if I break out the flatpick. However, I'm going to try and stick with it for awhile. Even though I give up some speed, I can play so much more cleanly that way.
Dukasyo - I've been using a .88 Ultex tri-corner pick. I like the slightly stiffer feel vs. a medium.

Hi Guys,
Just recovering from a minor illness and haven't been on line very much. I have just tabbed Mike Auldridge's "New Camptown Races" and did it all using a flatpick - posted it here today.
I have been using Jim Dunlop medium picks for some time now - I also use the Hard pick on my home-made dobro - it just sounds better. I still carry the pick I loaned Tut Taylor to use when I visited him in 2008, he showed me how to play Wabash Blues - I guess that makes me a member of the Dobrolic Plectral Society :-)
